LSA goodness
LSA goodness

LSA is short for linseed, sunflower and almonds. You grind these seeds down to a fine or coarse form  in a food processor and you have LSA:  One of nature’s super-foods…

Why is LSA a super-food?  Its packed with  goodness:  It’s high in protein, it’s got a healthy dose of Omega-3 fats (which help promote a healthy heart and brain function). LSA also helps boost bone and skin health thanks to a number of vitamin and minerals.  This clever mix also plays a great role in helping cleanse and detox the liver, which can help regulate cholesterol levels and help eliminate unwanted fat from the body.  Oh, did I mention it tastes delicious?

You can buy pre-made LSA from health food shops and some supermarkets.  I like to make my own though as it can get on the pricey side – it’s definitely more affordable to do it DIY-style!

Wondering how can you incorporate LSA into your diet?  Sprinkle a teaspoon on your cereal, on your yogurt, or add a tablespoon or two to any baking recipe e.g. Bread, muffins, cakes (I like adding this to meringues!).  My favourite ways to eat LSA includes adding a tablespoon to smoothies (like my Fab Feijoa Smoothie) as well as sprinkling it on fruit salads.

Tip: If you are new to LSA, start out with a tablespoon in your diet, don’t ‘go too hard too quick’, the linseed can cause gas – and you don’t want people to start avoiding you….

Ingredients
(Makes about 1 1/2 cups)

1/4 cup linseeds
1/3 cup sunflower seeds
3/4 cup almonds (skin on)

  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees (normal bake)
  • Place almonds in a roasting dish and lightly roast for about 10 minutes or until they are just starting to colour (Tip, when you can smell them, check them! You don’t want them to burn).  Set aside to completely cool.
  • While your almonds are roasting get cracking: Place half of the linseeds in a food processor and process till finely ground. Place in a bowl. Do the rest of the linseeds (doing half of the linseeds at a time is best, otherwise they take forever to grind!)
  • Add sunflower seeds to the food processor bowl and process until they are coarsely ground. Remove and put in the bowl with the ground linseeds.
  • Once the almonds are completely cool, place these in the food processor and grind until they are find but still fairly rough in texture.  Place these in the bowl with the linseeds and sunflower seeds and mix the three ingredients together. Done!
  • Store in an airtight container (I use an old jar) in a dark cupboard. Keeps for months!
