How to Exfoliate Before Vacation for an Even, Long-Lasting Tan

I don’t know how many times I’ve been frustrated by how fast my tan sometimes fades after a beach trip, and I know I’m not the only one. Most of us get home and watch our gorgeous bronze glow peel off in a few days and feel like we just wasted our time, and the secret to avoid that starts in your shower before even packing any bags!

While most people focus entirely on packing cute swimsuits or getting the right sunscreen (which is also important), to make your tan last as much as possible, you need to focus on removing the old dead skin from your body, and the best way to do that is exfoliating with a body scrub, but let’s take it to another level with the following tips I learned over the years.

Timing Is Everything for the Perfect Glow

You need to scrub your skin, that’s right, but timing will be your best friend because scrubbing your skin raw right before your flight will actually backfire. It’s not recommended because that way you will strip away your protective outer layer right before stepping into the sun, and this will only increase the risk of a bad sunburn.

You need to give it some time to settle because fresh skin is super sensitive. So, with this in mind, you should aim to do a big exfoliation session like two or three days before your trip.

This will give your skin enough time to properly recover, close up your pores, and rebalance your natural oils.

This timing also works best if you use a self-tanner. Apply the tanner a day after your scrub so it sticks to a smooth surface instead of settling into open pores.

And remember, do NOT rush the process. This will only cause irritation and will leave you with patchy tan.

Picking the Right Tools and Products for Your Skin

Now, while a good body scrub will do most of the work, you must be aware that every skin type needs a different approach, and picking the right product makes all the difference.

Try to avoid just grabbing the cheapest scrub you can find, since that can easily scratch your skin instead of smoothing it.

Also, make sure you consider your type of skin; for example, if you have normal to oily skin, a sugar or salt scrub will work perfectly for you, but if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, physical rubbing will lead to redness and breakouts

In those cases, salt is a bit too rough, so choose sugar when you want a gentler touch or try chemical exfoliants with alpha-hydroxy acids or lactic acid.

After you have found the right product, you must use the right tool; those matter just as much as the product you choose.

Using a basic washcloth; it will work just fine, but using an exfoliating mitt or dry brush will give you much better results.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Sloughing Away Dull Skin

After getting the right timing and the tools, it’s time to actually do it. For this, start by letting your skin soften up in a warm shower for five to ten minutes. Make sure you keep the water comfortable and not too hot; this will avoid drying your skin too much.

Once you’re nice and warm, step away from the direct water so your scrub stays on your body instead of washing right down the drain.

Then begin at your feet and work your way up using gentle, circular motions. This movement from bottom to top helps with your circulation.

Try spending a little extra time on your ankles, knees, and elbows because the skin there is thicker and holds onto dry patches. For your chest and neck, try to be very gentle since that skin is much thinner and more sensitive.

After you’re done, rinse everything off with lukewarm water. Run your hands over your arms and legs to check that you washed away all the gritty bits, and you will feel completely soft and refreshed.

Conclusion

Now you are all set to make that holiday tan last as long as it’s possible. All you need is a good quality scrub, the right tool, and perfect timing. This will make sure that you get rid of dry skin so you tan evenly without patchy spots.

On top of that, you can follow up with plenty of moisturizer and good sunscreens; this will make your color stay locked in for weeks after you get back.
